José Javier Rodríguez (JJR) brings to public service a personal commitment to justice shaped by his family’s story. His father fled the Cuban dictatorship in search of freedom, and together with his mother, raised their family in church and community, teaching them to look out for others. That legacy of courage and belief in American democracy inspired Rodríguez to become a lawyer and later run for office, always focused on giving voice to the voiceless and holding powerful interests accountable.
A graduate of Brown University and Harvard Law School, JJR began his career with the Peace Corps in Senegal before returning to Florida as a legal aid attorney representing working people whose wages were stolen or rights violated. In the Florida House and later the Senate, he fought corruption, defended voting rights, championed consumer protections, and pushed for affordable housing. After he introduced a pro solar measure in 2019, an internal email from then Florida Power and Light CEO Eric Silagy said, “I want you to make his life a living hell… seriously,” underscoring how threatened powerful interests felt by his independence.
In 2020, Rodríguez lost his reelection bid for the Florida Senate by just 32 votes in a race manipulated by a ghost candidate scheme. A no party candidate named Alex Rodriguez drew more than 6000 votes without running a real campaign.
Most recently Rodríguez served in the Biden administration as U.S. Assistant Secretary of Labor, where he expanded workplace protections, led job training programs, and worked to ensure all families, including immigrant and Latino families, had a fair shot at opportunity.
Now a candidate for Attorney General, Rodríguez is committed to being the Peoples Lawyer, keeping Floridians safe, fighting to lower costs, rooting out corruption, and holding the powerful accountable. He will serve as an independent voice for Floridians and their families.
JJR and his wife Sonia are raising two young sons in Florida, instilling in them the same values of service and community that shaped his own life. As a proud Latino leader with deep roots in Florida's diverse communities, he knows representation matters and that Florida needs an Attorney General who reflects the values and voices of all its people.
