As Corruption Questions Grow, Another Controversial Week for Attorney General James Uthmeier

This week marked yet another catastrophic chapter for Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, a week defined not by accountability or integrity, but by headlines tied to money, favoritism, and corruption. From launching a new “Public Corruption Unit” while still under scrutiny for his own role in the Hope Florida scandal, to defending a six-figure taxpayer-funded side gig, to unanswered questions about tens of millions in emergency spending, the pattern is becoming impossible to ignore. When the state’s top law enforcement officer is repeatedly at the center of financial controversies, serious questions about oversight are inevitable.

José Javier Rodríguez, Democratic candidate for Attorney General, released the following statement:

“Whether you’re trying to explain why $100,000 for two hours a week is ‘not that crazy,’ or why tens of millions of taxpayer dollars are being funneled into a cruel detention center with no audits and no transparency, you’ve already lost the plot. This is the same Attorney General now lecturing about corruption while questions remain about the $10 million Hope Florida transfer that landed in a political committee he chaired.

“Floridians are struggling with insurance, rent, utilities, and grocery bills, and nobody in Tallahassee is digging in. The job of Attorney General is to protect the public, not to protect your own political and financial interests. That changes in November. I’m ready to be Florida’s next Attorney General.”

Here’s a closer look at Uthmeier’s scandal-filled week:

Florida Politics: James Uthmeier launches new Public Corruption Unit scrutinizing legislative appropriations

“The new unit comes after about a year of conflict between Uthmeier and some state legislators.”

“The Hope Florida Foundation came under scrutiny after news broke that the organization was funneled $10 million from a Medicaid settlement that was supposed to go to state coffers. Much of that money later ended up in the Keep Florida Clean committee chaired by Uthmeier to fight the marijuana legalization effort in 2024. Uthmeier was Chief of Staff for DeSantis at the time.”

Miami Herald: How James Uthmeier became one of Florida’s most powerful politicians

“At the same time, Uthmeier hasn’t been able to shake questions and criticism over his connection to the Hope Florida political scandal. A state lawmaker has accused him of committing crimes related to the transfer of funds from a state settlement with a Medicaid contractor to a political committee he controlled while working for the governor. A grand jury investigation is underway. Uthmeier and DeSantis have denied wrongdoing.”

Florida Politics: 'Public servant' James Uthmeier says he needs 6-figure adjunct teaching gig to support 'growing family'

“Uthmeier suggests that if anything, he isn’t paid enough compared to what others in his position made.”

Orlando Sentinel: Maxwell: $92 million for porta-potties? Big spending at ‘Alligator Alcatraz’

“With few checks and balances — and zero audits — Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in the name of an immigration “emergency.” Some of it was dished out in no-bid deals. Some to companies that first made campaign donations to the governor and Republican Party.”

“A report last week from the Florida Phoenix found the state spent more than $400 million in just six months — with the biggest chunk going to a single company that specializes in porta-potties.”
